Mixed Flashcards
What are the types of Route indicators?
*Feather
*Illuminated letter
*Illuminated arrow
*Painted arrow
*Theatre type
*Dual Gauge route indicator
How is a signal diagram read?
Where is Flinders street?
Like a Map
Flinders street is on the LEFT
What are the types of Train stops?
*Automatic
*Fixed
*Speed proving (generally set to 25km/h)
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated NOT in the vicinity of a signal?
*Stop the train
*Check for derailment
*Make a TEC call
*Make a PA announcement
*Look for any obvious cause
*Reset the trip valve
*Proceed with EXTREME CAUTION to the next fixed signal
*Submit an incident report
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated in the vicinity of a HOME or DWARF signal?
*STOP the train
*Check for derailment
*Call the controlling signaller
*If signaller can’t be reached, make a TEC
*Make a PA announcement
*Act under instructions from Controlling signaller or Train controller
If no communication:
as above, but don’t more under any circumstances, continues trying to contact, adopt Train Overtime procedure
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated in the vicinity of an AUTOMATIC signal?
*STOP the train
*Check for derailment
*Make a TEC
*Make a PA announcement
*Act under instructions from Train controller, do NOT proceed until instructed
*Once authorised, proceed as per S3R1
How is a driver advised that a signal will be out of use?
How can you physically see it’s out of use?
What must a driver do?
*Safe working Circular
*Weekly operation notice (WON)
Will be extinguished with a black cross or a black bag across the front
A driver must disregard the signal
What speed must a terminal (dead end) platform be approached at?
What speed is required when assisting a train and the brake is controlled from the leading motor?
*25km/h from the start of the platform
*40km/h when assisting a train (controlled from front)
What speed is required for:
*Passing trailing points that are normally passed in the trailing position
*Shunting movements
*Pushing trains (rescuing)
*All movement within a siding
*Any wrong line movement when passing over a level crossing
All 15km/h
What is a speed board?
*Yellow reflective board with black lettering
*Indicates a permanent speed reduction
*Restriction ends when the front of the train passes the next fixed signal (unless stated otherwise)
*Can also be used to indicate max speeds over level crossings
*Locations will be made known by Safety Circulars
When must a driver reduce speed to the indicated speed on a CURVE board?
Before entering the curve
Normal speed can be reduced once the whole train is clear of the curve
What are the two WOLO levels?
What do they indicate?
- WOLO 80 (line specific)
Temp between 38 and 41
Must not exceed 80km/h - WOLO 70 (whole network)
Temp over 42
Must not exceed 70km/h
Can private ‘give way to trains’ level crossings be found on farmland?
Yes
What does ‘active control’ and ‘passive control’ mean in relation to level crossings?
Active control= flashing lights, bells, boom gates that are activated when a train is near
Passive control= only fixed warning signs (no bells or booms) that rely on the used to look for approaching trains
What are the three types of whistle boards?
- Normal type
- Healthy state indicator
- Predictor board
Where is a normal whistle board (white cross) located?
What must a driver do?
400m on the approach to a level crossing
The Driver must:
*Sound a long whistle at the board and then again prior to the level crossing
*Observe the level crossing is activated
*Observe the level crossing is clear of any obstructions (cars, people)
What does a Healthy state indicator whistle board do? (Yellow cross)
It has a white flashing light to indicate that the level crossing is working and activated
What does a Predictor Board (Black cross in a black circle) indicate?
That a driver must not increase speed until after the train has entered the level crossing
What must be done if two trains are approaching a level crossing at the same time?
Sound the whistle constantly until both trains have reached the crossing
What information is to be given to the train controller if a level crossing is defective?
The name of the level crossing (on whistle board)
The description of the fault
NEVER ENTER AN UNPROTECTED LEVEL CROSSING
If the train has been cautiously moved within 3m of a level crossing to activate the crossing, after waiting for the crossing to be active, what speed may the crossing be passed?
15km/h until the leading cab of the train is clear of the crossing
What are level crossing key switched used for?
Can the key be taken out when disabled?
*Used for extended delays
Faults, ill passengers, failure of circuitry
*NO, the key must stay in
How far away from a Tramway square is an advance warning “Tram square ahead” sign located?
When must speed be reduced by?
When does normal speed resume?
200 metres from the tram square
Speed must be reduced at the speed restriction sign “TRAM SQUARE”
“End tram square” sign
3-car= 80m
6-car= 160m
What way are Coasting, Series and Series Parallel?
Coasting= horizontal
Series= Right hand
Series parallel= left hand
