How is a signal diagram read?
Where is Flinders street?
Like a Map
Flinders street is on the LEFT
What are the types of Train stops?
*Automatic
*Fixed
*Speed proving (generally set to 25km/h)
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated NOT in the vicinity of a signal?
*Stop the train
*Check for derailment
*Make a TEC call
*Make a PA announcement
*Look for any obvious cause
*Reset the trip valve
*Proceed with EXTREME CAUTION to the next fixed signal
*Submit an incident report
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated in the vicinity of a HOME or DWARF signal?
*STOP the train
*Check for derailment
*Call the controlling signaller
*If signaller can’t be reached, make a TEC
*Make a PA announcement
*Act under instructions from Controlling signaller or Train controller
If no communication:
as above, but don’t more under any circumstances, continues trying to contact, adopt Train Overtime procedure
What is the procedure if the Trip is irregularly operated in the vicinity of an AUTOMATIC signal?

How is a driver advised that a signal will be out of use?
How can you physically see it’s out of use?
What must a driver do?
*Safe working Circular
*Weekly operation notice (WON)
Will be extinguished with a black cross or a black bag across the front
A driver must disregard the signal
What speed must a terminal (dead end) platform be approached at?
What speed is required when assisting a train and the brake is controlled from the leading motor?
*25km/h from the start of the platform
*40km/h when assisting a train (controlled from front)
What speed is required for:
*Passing trailing points that are normally passed in the trailing position
*Shunting movements
*Pushing trains (rescuing)
*All movement within a siding
*Any wrong line movement when passing over a level crossing
All 15km/h
What is a speed board?
*Yellow reflective board with black lettering
*Indicates a permanent speed reduction
*Restriction ends when the front of the train passes the next fixed signal (unless stated otherwise)
*Can also be used to indicate max speeds over level crossings
*Locations will be made known by Safety Circulars
When must a driver reduce speed to the indicated speed on a CURVE board?
Before entering the curve
Normal speed can be reduced once the whole train is clear of the curve
What are the two WOLO levels?
What do they indicate?
- WOLO 80 (line specific)
Temp between 38 and 41
Must not exceed 80km/h - WOLO 70 (whole network)
Temp over 42
Must not exceed 70km/h
Can private ‘give way to trains’ level crossings be found on farmland?
Yes
What does ‘active control’ and ‘passive control’ mean in relation to level crossings?
Active control= flashing lights, bells, boom gates that are activated when a train is near
