Mitral Regurgitation Flashcards
1
Q
What are the causes of mitral regurgitation? (6)
A
- Rhuematic heart disease
- Infective endocarditis
- MVP
- Papillary msucle rupture e.g. post MI
- Marfan’s
- SLE
secondary to severe left ventricular dilatation
2
Q
What type of murmur is a mitral regurgitation murmur?
A
Pansystolic murmur
Best heard at apex
Blowing in nature
Radiates to the axilla
3
Q
What features are associated with mitral regurgitation?
A
- 3rd heard sound
- Thrusting, displaced apex
- Quiet 1st heart sound
- Obliterated second heart sound
- AF
‘Clik’ in mitral valve prolapse prior to the murmur

Q
What are the differentials for a mitral regurgitation murmur? (3)
A
- VSD - e.g. post mI
- Tricuspid regurgitation
- look for pulsatile hepatomegaly
- look for giant V waves in JVP - AS - any systolic murmur
