Mitosis - Organisation P1 Flashcards
1
Q
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
A
23 pairs
2
Q
What happens during mitosis?
4 steps
A
- Chromosomes multiply themselves
- Sub cellular structures in the cell replicate e.g ribosomes and mitochondria
- Each copy goes to the opposite ends of the cell
- Cell divides and produces 2 daughter cells that have the same number of chromosomes.
3
Q
What are chromosomes?
A
They are made up of genes that have the instructions for making new cells/tissues/organs.
4
Q
Name the functions of mitosis
A
- Essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms
- Mitosis happens when an organism has to repair itself
MAIN: GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND REPAIR
