Alloys vs Pure Metals - Structure and Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
State the properties of alloys
The positive properties
A
- Better corrosion resistance
- Cheaper
- Stronger
- Better workability
- More durable than metals they are made from
2
Q
State the properties of alloys
The negative properties
A
- Electrical conductivity is lower than pure metals
- Lower melting points than metals from which they are made
3
Q
Describe the structure of alloys
A
Disorderly arrangement that includes different sized atoms
4
Q
Describe the structure of metals
A
Orderly arranged and all the atoms are the same size. They have a giant metallic structure. Metals are arranged in layers.
5
Q
Why are alloys harder than pure metals?
A
Alloys need a greater force to slide layers because it has different sized atoms - it distorts the layers.
6
Q
What is an alloy?
A
A mixture of 2 or more different elements (one has to be a metal)
