Mitosis & Meiosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Nuclear division giving rise to genetically identical cells
What is mitosis used for?
Growth
Repair of damaged tissues
Replacement of cells
Asexual reproduction
Describe the process of mitosis.
-Before mitosis starts, each chromosome in the cell will copy itself exactly by forming X-shaped chromosomes
-Chromosomes then line up in the middle of the cell which is then pulled apart by cell fibres
-The cell divides into 2, each cell now has a copy of each of the chromosomes
What is meiosis?
Nuclear division that gives rise to cells that are genetically different
What is meiosis used for?
The production of gametes
increasing genetic variation in offspring
Describe the process of meiosis.
-Chromosomes double themselves
-They then divide twice
-Chromosomes pair up along the center of the cell, which is then pulled apart by cell fibres, each new cell will have 1 chromosome pair
-Chromosomes will line up in the center of the new cell and get pulled apart by cell fibres
-Creates a total of 4 haploid daughter cells, these are the gametes
