Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection Flashcards
What is darwin’s theory?
Evolutionary change has occurred and that natural selection is the process that has driven this change
What is the process of natural selection?
-Individuals in a species will show change through differences in genes
-Individuals with characteristics more suited for survival in their environment will have a higher chance of survival
-Surviving individuals will most likely reproduce and pass on the advantageous alleles
-Over many generations these alleles will become more common in the population
Describe the process of antibiotic resistance.
-A random mutation can give rise to a new bacterial allele that codes for antibiotic resistance
-When the bacterial population is exposed to an antibiotic any individuals without antibiotic resistance will die, while those with antibiotic resistance will survive
-the surviving bacteria will reproduce and pass on the resistant alleles
-Over generations frequency of antibiotic-resistant alleles will increase and be more common in the population
