Mitosis Flashcards
What does mitosis cause?
Asexual reproduction
Growth
Tissue repair
What are the four main stages of mitosis?
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during prophase?
The chromosomes shorten and thicken as DNA supercoils
The nuclear envelope breaks down
The centrioles divide and separate to the two poles of the cell
Cytoskeleton protein threads form a spindle between these centrioles
What happens during metaphase?
The pair of chromatids attach to the spindle threads at the equator region
The spindles attach to the chromatids centromeres
What happens during anaphase?
The centromere of each pair of chromatids splits
Motor proteins pull the chromosomes to opposite ends of poles
Because their centromere goes first they form a V shape
What happens during telophase?
Separated chromosomes reach the poles
A new nuclear envelope forms
The cell now contains two nuclei each genetically identical to the other
What is cytokinesis?
Division of the cytoplasm of a cell following mitosis
What happens during cytokinesis of a plant cell?
An end plate forms where the equator of the spindle was, as new plasma membrane and cellulose cell walk material are laid down on either side along this end plate
