Mitosis Flashcards
How do viruses replicate ?
Injecting their nucleic acid into host to replicate
Why do prokaryotic cells not undergo cell division ?
Classed as non - living - unable to reproduce
Replicate via binary fission
What occurs in interphase ?
Growth, Dna synthesis , preparation for mitosis
Organelles double, Dna replicates, Cell grows
What are the products of nuclear division ?
Mitosis - 2 Diploid daughter cells
Meiosis - 4 Haploid daughter cells
State the products of mitosis
One round of division
Genetically identical cells (For growth/repair)
Diploid cells created
What occurs in Prophase ?
Chromosomes condense, become visible
What occurs in Metaphase ?
Chromosomes/Sister chromatids align along the equator of cell
Spindle fibres attach to centromere and chromatids
What occurs in Anaphase ?
Centromere splits, split into chromatids
Move to opposite ends of the cell
Requires ATP
What occurs in Telophase ?
Chromatids in groups at the poles
Uncoiling and become thinner
Spindle fibres disintegrate
State the equation to calculate the mitotic index
M . I = Number of cells in mitosis
Total number of cells X100
When does DNA replication/synthesis occur ?
During interphase
What is the name used to describe when the cells and cytoplasm split ?
Cytokinesis
What occurs during prophase in mitosis ?
Chromosomes condense, becoming shorter, fatter and more visible
Nuclear envelope breaks down and the nucleolus disappears
Protein bundles, centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell
Microtubules form the spindle fibres between the cell
