Missed Qs Flashcards
What components are needed for a hydrogen bond?
H-bond donor: H bonded to EN element (thus pulling e density away from H atom)
H-bond acceptor: another EN element with LP that can bind to H
What is an ebulliator used for (creates air bubbles in vacuum distillation)?
Analogous to boiling chips
Break surface tension to prevent from superheating/bumping
Red litmus paper turns blue one
With alkaline pH
Blue litmus paper turns red when?
with acidic conditions
Acidic conditions change what color litmus paper?
Blue power ranger (#2) cant handle and needs red power ranger (#1)
Alkaline conditions change what color litmus paper?
Red to blue
- red power ranger is too basic
- calls in blue power ranger
NaNO2 is considered basic why?
When hydrolyzed, forms OH-
- water’s hydrogen neutralizes the NO2- and OH- ions shift pH
in a reaction, what can be added that won’t change when added in excess?
Catalyst or indicator
How does speed of sound relate to speed of electromagnetic radiation?
Much slower
- speed of sound in air is 340 m/s
- speed of light is 3E8 m/s
What is faster, speed of sound or speed of electro magnetic radiation, slowest being radio waves?
Electromagnetic radiation/radio waves > speed of sound
Why is water usually omitted from a keq constant equation
It is usually a solvent and constant throughout the reaction
What characteristic most determines reactivity of elements
Ionization potential which is the energy to remove an electron
Volume of gas depends on what factors?
of moles only, if you use PV = nRT you can estimate in relation to other substances under similar conditions
What can you draw about low solubility constant?
Decrease concentration in solution
- less soluble: likely to precipitate as solid first
- less soluble, less ionized. Good if one of the dissolved substances as ionic is damaging or toxic
In a pipe of varying velocity, where is there max pressure?
Max pressure: at max diameter, where velocity is lowest
