Missed info (TEST 1) Flashcards
What are the two options for genetic descendance
Monophyletic and paraphyletic
What are sarcophytes?
Organisms that feed off dead organisms
What is the Linnaean hierarchy?
Domain Supergroup Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus (capital letter) Species
What is deductive reasoning?
Apply general principles to small results (big to small)
What is inductive reasoning?
Apply specific information to construct general principles (small to big)
What are the six supergroups and which clearly include which kingdom?
Chromalveota Rhizaria Excavata Amoebozoa Opisthokonta (animalia and fungi) Archaeplastida (plantae)
What are the two cellular generators?
Mitochondria and chloroplast
What is the principle of the differential survival and reproduction of individuals with certain inherited traits, the major mechanism for evolution?
Natural selection
What is the process in which species arise and change over time, the idea that all organisms have descended from common ancestors?
Evolution
What is fitness?
The ability to produce offspring. High fitness=to produce many surviving offspring
What is adaptation?
Traits that increase the fitness of an individual in a particular environment.
Who had the right and the wrong theory about evolution?
Darwin had the right one
Lamarck had the wrong one (giraffes)
Who did the experiment to simulate Earth conditions?
Miller and Urey
What was the Miller Urey experiment?
They simulated an atmosphere righ in hydrogen and lacking hydrogen. Within a week, simple compounds formed. Hence, they concluded that life could appear in these conditions.
What forms a phosphodieseter bond?
Nucleic acid monomers.
