Miscellaneous Key Terms Flashcards
Amniote egg
The type of egg produced by reptiles, birds, and prototherian (egg-laying) mammals (amniotes), in which the embryo develops inside an amnion.
Amniote
an animal whose embryo develops in an amnion and chorion and has an allantois; a mammal, bird, or reptile
Amphibian
a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, and caecilians. They are distinguished by having an aquatic gill-breathing larval stage followed (typically) by a terrestrial lung-breathing adult stage.
Brachiopods
A group of animals that have hard “valves” (shells) on the upper and lower surfaces, unlike the left and right arrangement in bivalve molluscs. Brachiopod valves are hinged at the rear end, while the front can be opened for feeding or closed for protection.
Bryozoans
Aquatic invertebrate animals
filter feeders
Moss animals
Choanocytes
a flagellated cell with a collar of protoplasm at the base of the flagellum - found in sponges.
Chordates
Animal having at some stage of development a notochord (flexible spinal column) and nerve cord running along the back, a tail stretching above and behind the anus, and gill slits.
Ecdysozoans
Type of Protosome
Eumetazoans
is a clade comprising all major animal groups except sponges, placozoa, and several other extinct or obscure life forms
Eutherians
Clade
a mammal of the major group Eutheria, which excludes the marsupials and monotremes.
Hexapod
a six-legged arthropod
Holometabolous
Complete metamorphism
Form of insect development which includes four life stages – as an embryo or egg, a larva, a pupa and an imago or adult
Incomplete Metamorphosis
A type of metamorphosis in which an insect hatches from an egg and then goes through several nymphal stages. Each nymphal stage looks like a small version of the adult but getting slightly bigger with age.
Instars
A phase between two periods of moulting in the development of an insect larva or other invertebrate animal.
Lophophore
a structure in certain small marine invertebrates, having the shape of a horseshoe and bearing ciliated tentacles around the mouth.
