Fluoroquinolones: Ciprofloxacin MOA?
Bactericidal against most aerobic gram +ve/-ve
What happens quickly when being treated w/ Fluoroquinolone: Ciprofloxacin?
Resistance can develop really quickly during tx
It will not WORK with c-diff or staph aureus
What are some important considerations for Fluoroquinolone: Ciprofloxacin in children?
AVOID in children <16 y/o
EXCEPT for complicated UTIs or anthrax prophylaxis
What Fluoroquinolone can you use in children >28 days?
Levofloxacin
What are common a/e with Fluoroquinolones?
Tendon rupture (rhabdomyolysis)
C diff infx
Exacerbates mm. weakness
What would you use at 16 y/o with caution?
Ciprofloxacin
What could you do to assess safe dosing for older adults?
Creatinine clearance testing (creatinine is a byproduct of mm. metabolism; you can see how much mm. is being cleared from the body…thus knowing how much mm. is being metabolized/left).
