benzocaine spray
topicaal anesthetic
description
benzocaine spray
hurricane
stabilizes neuronal membrane which blocks the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses
indications
benzocaine spray
hurricane
used as a lubricant and topical anesthetic to facilitate passage of diagnostic and treatment devices. suppresses the pharyngeal and tracheal gag reflex

0.25-0.5 second spray, repeat as needed
name/class thiamine
thiamine
vitamin
description
thiamine
thiamine is vitamin b1 which is required to convert glucose to energy. it is not manufactured by the body and must be constantly provided from injested food
indications
thiamine
chronic aoholism with associated coma
coma of unknown origin
delirium tremens
contraindictions
thiamine
none
precautions
thiamine
known hypersensitivity to the drug
dosage/route
thiamine
100 mg IV/IM
pedi dosage/route
thiamine
10-25 mg IV/IM
name/class sodium bicarbonate
NaHCO3
alkalizing agent
name/class NaHCO3
sodium bicarbonate
alkalizing agent
description
sodium bicarbonate
NaHCO3
sodium bicarbonate provides vascular bicarbonate to assist the buffer system in reducing the effects of metabolic acidosis and in the treatment of some overdoses
Indications
Sodium Bicarbonate
NaHCO3
tricyclic antidepressent and barbiturate overdose, refractory acidosis or hyperkalemia
contraindictions
Sodium Bicarbonate
NaHCO3
none when used in severe hypoxia or late cardiac arrest
precautions
Sodium Bicarbonate
NaHCO3
may cause alkalosis if given in too large a quanity. it may also deactivate vasopressors and may precipitate with calcium chloride
dosage/route
Sodium Bicarbonate
NaHCO3
1 mEq/kg IV, then 0.5 mEq/kg/10 min
pedi dosage/route
Sodium Bicarbonate
NaHCO3
same as adult
1 mEq/kg IV, then 0.5 mEq/kg/10 min
name/class timopatic
timopatic
beta blocker
description
timopatic
timopatic is a non selective beta adrenergic receptor blocking agent
indications
timopatic
HTN, MI, Elevated ocular pressure
Contraindictions
timopatic
asthma severe COPD sinus brady 2nd/3rd degree AV Block cardiogenic shock
precautions
timopatic
readily absorbed
dosage/route
timopatic
opthalmic: one dropper eye BID
name/class tetracaine
opthalmic
anesthetics
name/class opthalmic
tetracaine
anesthetics
description
tetracaine
ophthalmic
after topical application to the eye, local anesthetics penetrate to sensory nerve endings in the corneal tissue. these medications block both the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses by
the neuronal membranes permeability to sodium ions. this reversibility stabilizes the membrane and inhibits depolarization resulting in the failure of a propagated action potential and subsequent conduction blockade
indications
tetracaine
ophthalmic
eye injuries or foreign objects
contraindictions
tetracaine
ophthalmic
hypersensitivity
dosage/route
tetracaine
ophthalmic
1-2 drops in each eye
name/class phenytoin
dilantin
anti convulsant
name/class dilantin
phenytoin
anti convulsant
description
phenytoin
dilantin
phenytoin is a derivative related to phenobarbital that reduces the spread of electrical discharges in the motor cortex and inhibits seizures it also has antidysrhythmias properties that counteract the effect of digitalis
indications
phenytoin
dilanti
seizures
status epilepticus
cardiac dysrthythmias secondary to digital toxicity
contraindictions
phenytoin
dilantin
seizures due to hypoglycemia
sinus bradycardia
heart block
adams stroke syndrome
precautions
phenytoin
dilantin
hepatic or renal impairment alcoholism cardiogenic shock elderly bradycardia respiratory depression
seizures dosage/route
phenytoin
dilantin
status epilepticus: 10-15 mg/kg slow IV no more than 50 mg/min
pedi seizures dosage/route
phenytoin
dilantin
8-10 mg/kg slow IV
dysrhythmias dosage/route
phenytoin

osmitrol
osmotic diuretic
name/class osmitrol
mannitol
osmotic diuretic
description
mannitol
osmitrol
mannitol is an osmotic diuretic that draws water into the intravascular space through it’s hypertonic effects then causes diuresis
indications
mannitol
osmitrol
cerebral edema
contraindictions
mannitol
osmitrol
hypersensitivity

description
calcium chloride
calcium chloride increases myocardial contractile force and increases ventricular automaticity
indications
