What does APGAR stand for?
A
Activity - muscle tone, Pulse - HR, Grimace - reflex irritability, Appearance - Color, Respoiratoion - RR

How do you manage APGAR scores?
A
If < 7 at 5 minutes, then continue q 5 minute APGARS for 20 minutes. If < 5 at 5 minutes, get umbilical artery blood gas

What does Apgar not determine?
A
need for resuscitation, diagnose asphyxia, future neurologic outcome, neonatal mortality

What are the components of a bishop score?
A
Dilation, effacement, descent, postiion, consistency

How do you interpret apgar score?
A
8+ predicts probability of vaginal delivery is same as if pt went into spontaneous labor
6 or less denotes unfavorable or unripe cervix

what are contraindications to breast feeding?
A
- substance abuse (including alcohol)
- HIV Positive
- untreated TB or varicella
- HSV on breast
