Q

Who argues against existence of Miracles?

A

David Hume

28
Q

What 4 arguments does Hume give?

A

Never enough evidence.
Witnesses are uneducated.
Witness are unreliable.
Religions depend on miracles.

29
Q

David Hume: “Never enough evidence.” Explain.

A

There is sufficient scientific proof that humans cannot fly or appear in to places at once so they cannot be accepted as miracles. Plus, 200,000 people go to Lourdes each year but only 66 “miracles” have occurred in 150 years.

30
Q

David Hume: “Witnesses are uneducated.” Explain.

A

The witnesses of miracles are usually uneducated (St Bernadette) so have a lack of scientific understanding so cannot explain occurrences any other way.

31
Q

David Hume: “Witness are unreliable.” Explain.

A

Witnesses of miracles wanted them to happen so their opinion is biased. Therefore they may exaggerate or lie about miracles happening.

32
Q

David Hume “Religions depend on miracles” Explain.

A

Religions depend on miracles to prove their claims to be true, however not all the religions can be right so they must all be wrong.

33
Q

Problems with Humes arguments: “Never enough evidence.” Explain.

A

Miracles are supposed to be a rare occurrence and break the laws of nature.

34
Q

Problems with Humes arguments: “The Witnesses are unreliable”. Explain.

A

Events are researched and witnesses are interviewed to see if they are reliable before considered a miracle.

35
Q

Problems with Humes arguments: “The Witnesses are uneducated”. Explain.

A

Many miracles have occurred to people with a high level of education.

36
Q

Problems with Humes arguments: “Religions depend on miracles”. Explain.

A

religions don’t depend on miracles. Miracles just support the beliefs and teachings.
