1.4 million migrants
Why did so many migrants come to the UK?
Due to a shortage of labour, Britain offered a citizenship to any that fought in WW2 this encouraged people to come over to the UK
What was life like for the immigrants?
Poor - experience segregation, there was resentment between white and black men. Language barriers were caused
Who were the Teddy Boys and what did they do?
A group of young white men who felt that young immigrants were stealing their women.
What did the government do to show racism?
Tried to stop immigrants from buying high profile houses
Give three reasons why the government had to intervene with the immigration?
People felt like there were too many immigrants
Poor relations had occured
Factory owners became reluctant to imply them
What legislation was passed in 1962 to decrease immigration?
Commonwealth Immigrants Act
What did the Commonwealth Immigrants Act of 1962 do?
Controlled the immigration of all Commonwealth passport holders, meaning that immigrants had to apply for a work voucher

Commonwealth Immigrants Act
What did the Commonwealth Immigrants Act of 1968 do?
Put tighter on immigrants that now held a British passport. If people had no parent or grandparent that hadn’t lived previously they weren’t allowed

Immigration Act
What did the Immigration act of 1971 do?
Replaced the employment vouchers with work permits allowing temporary residence in Britain, the government would take part in assisting people in moving back after time
How did the Act of 62,68 and 71 impact relations?
Worsened them as people felt that the government was trying to stop non-white immigration
Who was Enoch Powell?
Conservative MP in 1968
What did Enoch Powell do?
Gave a speech called ‘Rivers of Blood’ that said immigration posed a threat to British Identity

Brixton Riots

Race Relations Act of 1976
What happened in 1977 in Lewisham?
The national front marched through the borough
How did the Battle of Lewisham impact immigrants and police relations?
The black community felt let down by the police for not stopping the march. Black people were also being blamed for crime within the area
Why was the late 1970s a problem for the UK?
It was a time of economic recession creating unemployment, poor housing and higher crime rates
What law was seen to be racial profiling?
The sus law
What did the the sus law allow police officers to do?
Allowed officers tp stop and search people they suspected were about to commit a crime

What was Operation Swamp 81?
Where plain clothed policeman from other districts used the sus law as a way to prevent street crime.
