Minerals Flashcards
What is an atom?
Smallest part of an element and has all the properties of that particular element. Atoms make up compounds.
What is a compound?
A substance made of two or more elements that are bonded together or have been chemically joined.
What are minerals?
Has four properties, is a solid, naturally formed, inorganic, and has a crystalline structure, fixed chemical formula
Which two elements are most common in minerals?
Oxygen and silicon
How are silicate materials different from nonsilicate materials?
Silicate is a mixture of silicon and oxygen. 90% of the earth’s crust is made up of Silicate. The other 10% is made up of nonsilicate which does not have a mixture of silicon and oxygen
Are cupcakes, teeth, water and oxygen- minerals?
No *know why**
How do you determine a minerals streak?
Rub the mineral on an unglazed porcelain plate and lol at the color powder left behind
What is the difference between cleavage and fracture?
C- mineral breaks of a flat edge
F- mineral brakes on many uneven, rugged pieces
What do you do to determine the hardness of a mineral?
The Moh’s hardness scale, you scratch the mineral you are trying to figure out with a mineral listed on the hardness scale, the mineral is scratched it is softer then the mineral it is scratched with
T/F topaz is harder then Quartz
True
Is using the color of a mineral to determine what it is reliable?
No
What is an example of of how a mineral a is described by luster?
Pearly, waxy, dull etc
What property applies to only a few mineral ?
Magnetism
T/F talc can scratch fluorite
False
T/F Pipetting by mouth is always a good idea
False
T/F One can find out about safety precautions, and appropriate first aid, about a chemical by using the SFS, or “Sheets for Safety”.
False
T/F Aprons can be used in the lab during experiments. One reason to use an apron instead of a lab coat would be to remove the apron quickly if a spill on it should occur.
True
T/FIf glass should fall and break, the appropriate action would be to immediately pick up the broken pieces with your hands.
False
T/F In order to carry out a chemical reaction that produces potentially dangerous odors, one should use a fume hood.
