what are the 2 definitions of mindfulness?
- awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally -Kabat-zinn
-a flexible state of mind in which we are actively engaged in the present, noticing new things and sensitive to context - Langer
what is state and trait mindfulness?
trait- characteristic of the person, they are generally mindful in any situation
state- temporary, can be induced through meditative practice
what is the difference between mindlessness and mindfulness?
mindlessness - a state of mind where the mind is largely inactive eg. autopilot when driving
mindfulness- being present and actively aware of surroundings, thoughts, feelings, adaptable to change in the environment
what is skill acquisition?
progression of learning skills from thinking about every movement, to almost autopilot
what are the benefits of mindfulness?
- strategies to prevent choking/ poor performance
- can increase flow-state
- can improve mental wellbeing
- can decrease anxiety and reduce the possibility of reinvestment
what is reinvestment?
chocking under pressure can cause anxiety, athletes may attempt to consciously control automated movements
this reduces skill efficiency
mindfulness reduces the anxiety
