Milgram’s variations Flashcards
What is Milgram’s variations?
Milgram repeated his study to see effects of different factors
What were the aims?
Wanted to observe what situational factors were most important within obedience, + whether this influenced level of obedience
What changes did he make?
Changes to location, who authority figure is, ppt personality + proximity
Did this to see how much these would effect degree of obedience to authority figure
Explain what happened in location (Variation 10)
OG study took place at Yale university (prestigious environment), + ppts said they obeyed bc of this
Location changed to run down office block in industrial city Bridgeport, + experimenter wore ordinary clothes not lab coat
What happened during telephone instructions (variation 7)?
Milgram thought being close to experimenter could influence obedience levels
Experimenter provided ppts with initial instructions abt study functioning then informed them that rest of instructions would be given over phone
What happened during an ordinary person as the authority figure (variation 13)?
Experiemnter was confederate pretending to be ppt
3 ppl, 2 confederates as learner + recorder, ppt as teacher
Experimenter called out of room + suggested ppt should carry on until learner knew word lists, recorder then suggested that they should increase shocks to learner with every wrong answer
What were the results of Milgram’s variations?
V10 rundown office = 47.5% obedient
V7 telephone instructions = 22.5% obedient
V13 Experimenter as ordinary person = 20% obedient
What conclusions can we make from the variation findings?
V10 = More likely to obey in prestigious environment
V7 = More likely to obey in close proximity to one giving orders
V13 = More likely to obey if looks like authority figure
