Milgram's Study AO1 Flashcards
1
Q
Explain the procedure of Milgrim’s study.
A
- 40 men aged 20-50 were used
- where aquired via a newspaper or mail
- occured at Yale University
- a fake shock generator with volts ranging from 15-450 with labels decribing the level of the shock
- participants were told the experiment was on how punsishment affects behaviour
- the ‘teacher’ (the real participant) asked the ‘learner’ (confederate) about the word pairs they had learn and then shocked them if they were wrong and increase the voltage each time
- ‘learner’ (confederate) would cry out in pain and in extreme distress at 330 volts
2
Q
What would the ‘experimentor’ say if the ‘teacher’ refused to continue?
A
- please continue
- the experiment requires that you continue
- it’s absolutely essential that you continue
- you have no other choice, you must go on
3
Q
What are the results/findings of the experiment?
A
- 100% administered 300 volts
- 65% administered up to 450 volts
- 35% stopped before 450 volts
- many participants desplayed nervous behaviours (shaking nail biting)
- milgrim concluded that in the right conditions then anyone is capable of such behaviours
4
Q
What factors affect obidence levels?
A
- proximity
- location
- uniform
5
Q
What affect does proximity have on obedience?
A
- the further away you are from the authoriy figure, the less likely you are to obey
- in the original experiment 65% went up to 450 volts but when the experimentor was giving orders over the phone only 21% went up to 450 volts
6
Q
What affect does location have on obedience?
A
- instead of the prestigious university, yale, they condeucted the experiemt in a run down building
- this caused obedience to drop to 48%
6
Q
What affect does uniform have on obedience?
A
- in original the experimentor was in a grey lab coat but in another version the experimentor was called away and a person in normal clothes came in
- this decreased obedience to 20%
