UK migration policies within EU
citizens are free to live and work in any of the blocs 28 member states- without the need for a visa known as free movement of labour
biggest no. of migrants come from eastern europe
restrictions;
after 3 months proof of work, education/ sufficient resource to support themselves (no benefits)
jamaican migration policy
1) international organisation for migration (1994-98) funded a return of talent program to offer incentives such as:
allowances, insurance, salary subsidies
required to stay a minimum of 2 years so they can transfer skills to other individuals
so that highly qualified professionals to fill vacant positions in the public sector
only 60 have been recruited
2) returning residents program (1993 still inn operation)
to help jamaican nationals return by supplying info on jobs and investment opportunities/ links with employers
nigerian migration policy

UK migration policies outside EU
you must apply for a visa
tier 1: investors and “exceptional talent”
tier 2: skilled workers (most common)
tier 3: unskilled labour (given out)
tier 4: student visa
tier 5: educational programmes (short term)
some visas allows you to bring dependants such as children and partners
visas have gotten tougher in recent years such as knowing english and is based on a points (from salaries or if your job is on the shortage list)
those that breach terms of their visa are breaking the law
now: tier 2 is experienced skilled worker (at least £30,000 to apply) and is capped at 20,700 per year
UK migration policies on asylum seekers
given housing and financial support until application is dealt with
might be granted refugee status
if seeker or dependant is denied they can appeal against it (usually has high success rate)
in 2017 6,854/17,390 appeals were accepted
UK committed to taking in 20,000 syrian refugees by 2020 as part of international humanitarian effort

300,000- over 1 million illegal migrants in the UK
2012 policy attempts to make life for illegal immigrants more difficult
