What is a migrant
International migrants move across State borders; internal migrants move within state borders
What is a refugee?
Persons with a well-founded fear of persecution who cross an international border
What is an internally displaced persons (IDPs)
Displaced by war, disaster, persecution within their own borders
What is a stateless person?
A person not recognized as citizens/nationals of any country
What is a humanitarian emergency?
A situation “affecting large civilian populations that usually involve a combination of factors including war or civil strife, food shortages, and population displacement, resulting in significant excess mortality
What is a disaster?
A serious disruption of the functioning of society, causing widespread human material or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected society to cope using is own resources
What are causes of disasters/emergencies?
Poverty

Rapid urbanization and migration
Social/cultural transitions
Environmental degradation
Lack of awareness and information
War and civil strife

Governments
