Midterm Prep Extinction and Ecology Terms Flashcards
The sixth extinction
rapid population decrease not caused by natural forces
mutualism
relationship that benefits both species
commensalism
one species benefits, other is unaffected
amensalism
one species is unaffected, other is harmed
parasitism
one species benefits, other is harmed
competition
two species require the same resource
the four trophic levels consist of
- Primary producer (plants)
- Primary consumer (herbivores)
- Secondary consumer (predation)
- Tertiary consumer (apex predators)
ecosystem
abiotic features + a biotic community make up an ecosystem
niche
interrelationship of a species with all biotic/abiotic factors affecting it
generalists vs specialists
Generalists- a species that can live in many different types of environments and have a varied diet. Ex. rats
Specialists- species that are adapted to narrow habitats, limited food resources, or other specific environmental conditions. Ex. panda
biome
abiotic environment + living communities divided into major geographic regions
ecology
the study of the relationships among living organisms and with their physical environment
population
all members of a species in a particular area
community
all living species within a particular area
symbiosis
long term interaction between two different species living in close association
