Friends of the Earth
Most Aboriginal peoples believed the land had been made by a Creator of the “Great Spirit” for all to use. They felt everything on the Earth was sacred and to be respected.

Masters of the Land
Aboriginal peoples were all highly organized societies with shared values in leadership. Each nation had the ability to live off the land, using every part of the animal they hunted.

First Aboriginal Nations
Aboriginal people were here long before the Europeans arrived. There were many different groups. These were the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis.

Exploration-Colonization
The Europeans first came to North America while trying to find a trade route to Asia because the overland trade routes where blocked. They first started establish colonies when they found that this land has many natural resources.

Before the Europeans came to North America the Vikings had already claimed some of North America and called it Vinland

European Powers
The European countries France, Britain, and Spain all claimed land in North America. Each country was very powerful.

England
When they first came to North America, the British claimed land near Hudson’s Bay called Rubert’s Land. The Thirteen Colonies was located on the East coast of what know is the USA.

France
When France came to North America, they claimed a massive colony along the St. Lawrence River.

Spain
Spain claimed land lower in North America around what is now Mexico. They didn’t play much importance in Canada’s development.

Glory
Finding riches in North America would mean that the explorers would be recognized for their accomplishments

When the Europeans came to North America and found the First Nations and tried to convert them to their religion

Gain
The Europeans wanted riches, land, wealth, glory, and resources for their country. They also wanted to gain more than the other European countries.

Fur & Fish Fights
When the Europeans found they could trade with the First Nations for furs, the fur trade began. The demand grew in Europe when the hat craze began. The beaver furs could be made into hats.

Confrontations
The fur trade caused wars and battles over furs, land, and wealth. Many beavers and animals where killed in the fur trade.

Acadians Scattered
The Seven Years War ended with the Treaty of Paris in which Britain took control of almost all of Frances claims in North America, including Acadia. The British made the Acadians take an oath of neutrality, which was okay for a while. But when a war was likely the British made the Acadians take an oath of allegiance, but the Acadians wouldn’t take it. The British didn’t like that so they deported the Acadians
