Midterm Connective Tissue Flashcards
What surrounds every part of the body?
Fluids
ground substances
transparent fluid/gels made of carbs and proteins. Ground substance surrounds all cells as fluid for chemical reactions to occur, full of fibroblasts that create more ground substance and collagen.
Collagen
the thin white fibers is the most abundent protein in the animal kingdom, 40% of all proteins in the body. Fibroblasts can trabel throughout the body and change their chemical make-up to be able to produce whatever kind of cell is needed there! Very important to healing!
Fluid Crystal
ground substance is referred to as fluid crystal. more fluid when heated/stirred up via movement or bodywork or stiffer as we are sedentary, chronic stress also causes connective tissue to thicken. This also helps in growth and healing because different body parts need connective tissues at different densities.
Thixotropy
the thickening and hardening of connective tissue as we age. Scar tissue demonstrates this property as well.
Hydrostatic Pressure
Connective tissue creates a framework that suspends the bones in fluid that is held ridged with wrapping pressure. This leads to Tensegrity = connective tissue + active muscles + bones function, not as stack of building blocks, but rather poles, guide wires. There is more weight in the tension of these wires than in the bones, which actually act more as spacers than blocks.
Somatotrophin
growth hormone, stimulates fibroblasts, lots of it in kids but adults also have it for healing, muscle growth etc.
Cortisone
from adrenal glands, inhibits fibroblasts, can reduce inflammation but also reduces the body’s ability to heal. Stress brings it out.
