midterm Authentic Movement Flashcards
Who created Authentic movement
Mary Starks Whitehouse in the 1950’s. It was a response to the heteronormativity in the dance world. The technique was developed further by Janet Adler, PhD. Whitehouse
What did Authentic movement do? (what did it develop?, through what/who?)
It connected Jung’s Active Imagination with modern dance, developing the role of the witness
What is witnessing in Authentic Movement?
Witnessing is like meditation in that it aims for an accepting/non-judgmental awareness/compassion
What does authentic movement connect?
Authentic movement connects the individual and the collective experience.
What are the four steps in Authentic movement?
1) Move (eyes closed, allow sound, stillness, different qualities)
2) Witness ( safe, non-judgmental)
3) Draw/Write (both mover and witness)
4) Share (Witness describes what they experienced in empathetic, non-interpretive, present tense language)
