Bartenieff Fund: 1) total body connectivity
everything effects the other movement. The idea of tensegrity.
Bartenieff Fund 2) Breath Support
connecting breath and movement
Bartenieff Fund 3) grounding
gravity, the earth
Bartenieff Fund 4) developmental patterns
conditioned movement habits and patterns
Bartenieff Fund 5) inner-outer
our inner world has an impact on our outer world-the environment. Our choices leave footprints big or small. Also, the environment can effect our inner world. For example, If you are homosexual living with a family that is against homosexuality, your outer environment is harmful to your inner self. inner-outer doesn’t just focus on the harmful effects though.
Bartenieff Fund 6) intent
not just how you approach something but WHY you approach something. Are you walking through central park with a loved one or are you on a way to an audition on the west side? Your intent behind the movement changes how you move.
Bartenieff Fund 7) Function
expression breeds functionality. If western medicine isn’t helping, perhaps that patient has something they need to express. Through that expression, they are able to physically function. Functionality can also breed expression. It works both ways.
Bartenieff Fund 8) stability-mobility
a balance between your what is stable ( exp. the thoracic vertebrae) and what is mobile ( exp. the cervical and lumbar vertebrae) Finding the mobility in what is stable and finding the stability in what is mobile.
Bartenieff Fund 9) exertion
recuperation: finding the balance between work and rest. If a dancer keeps getting hurt, they might need to rest. If a non-dancer, non-athletic person keeps getting hurt, they might need to strengthen the muscle in certain areas with work
Bartenieff Fund 10) Phrasing
movement sequence in the body
Bartenieff Fund 11) complexity
respecting the complexity of the human body and everything connected to it.
Bartenieff Fund 12) Personal Uniqueness
celebrating the uniqueness in every individual. Everyone will have a different approach to these 12 Fundamentals and that is awesome!
