midterm chap2 Flashcards
how multicultural theorists explain abnormal functioning
all behavior and treatment are best understood in the context of culture, cultural values, and external pressures in that context
family-social treatments
group therapy, family therapy, couple therapy, community treatment
how family-social theorists explain abnormal functioning
argue that theorists should concentrate on forces that operate directly on individuals as they move through life
sociocultural model of abnormality
includes two major perspectives: family-social and multicultural; focuses on the fact that abnormal behavior includes social and cultural forces that influence an individual (social labels, social roles, social networks, and family structure/communication)
existentialist model of abnormality
emphasis on accurate self-awareness and meaningful life (authentic); psychological dysfunction is caused by self-deception
humanistic model of abnormality
emphasis on people as friendly, cooperative, and constructive; focus on the drive to self-actualize through honest recognition of strengths and weaknesses
other treatment options for the cognitive-behavioral model
acceptance and commitment therapy; mindfulness-based techniques
cognitive dimension of the cognitive-behavioral and treatment
focuses on maladaptive thinking processes; therapists help clients recognize, challenge, and change problematic thinking and guide the clients to new ways of thinking in daily life
behavioral dimension of the cognitive-behavioral and treatment
uses conditioning; therapists, as teachers, seek to help replace problematic behaviors with more appropriate behaviors
cognitive-behavioral model of abnormality
focuses on maladaptive behaviors and/or cognitions in understanding and treating psychological abnormality
treatments using the psychodynamic model of abnormality
psychodynamic therapies (seek to uncover past trauma and inner conflicts with the therapist acting as a guide)
psychodynamic model of abnormality
person’s behavior is determined largely by underlying unconscious, dynamic, psychological forces
biological model of abnormality
the biological basis and medical perspective; illness brought about by malfunctioning parts of the organism
treatment options using the biological model of abnormality approach
drug therapy (antianxiety, antidepressant, antibipolar, antipsychotic), brain stimulation (direct or indirect brain stimulation), psychosurgery (brain surgery for mental disorders)
