What is a chronic disease?
A health condition that persists over time, typically for periods longer than 3 months.
What is the biopsychosocial model of health?
An approach to studying health and human function that posits the importance of biological, psychological, and social processes.
What is health?
The complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being.
What is a mind-body connection?
The idea is that our mind and thought affect our body functions.
What is Psychosomatic medicine?
An interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on how biological, psychological, and social processes contribute to physiological changes in body and health over time.
What is psychoneuroimmunology?
A field of study examining the relationship between psychology brain function and immune function.
What is a stressor?
An event of stimulus that includes a feeling of stress.
What are daily hassles?
Irritations in daily life that are not necessarily traumatic but cause difficulties and bring stress.
What is stress?
A pattern of physical and psychological responses in an organism after it perceives a threatening event and disturbs homeostasis.
What is general adaption syndrome?
A three-phase model of stress includes mobilization of physiological resource phase, a coping phase, and an exhaustion phase.
What is resilience?
The ability to ‘bounce back from negative situations to normal functioning.
What is problem-focused coping?
A set of coping strategies that are aimed at improving and changing stressful situations.
What is emotion-focused coping?
The coping stage focused on reducing emotions associated with a stressful event.
What is control?
The feeling like you have the power to change your environment or behavior if you want to.
What is self-efficiency?
The belief that one can perform adequately in specific situations
What are health behaviors?
Any behavior related to health either good or bad.
What is social integration?
The size at which your social network or number of social roles (sister, dad, student. etc..)
What is social support?
The perception or actually that we have a social network that can help you in times of need and provide us with a variety of use pull resources.
What is type A behavior?
A behavior that is categorized by impatience competencies, neuroticism hostility, and anger.
What is type B behavior?
Type B behaviors reflect the absence of type a characteristics and are represented less competitive aggressive and hostile behaviors.
What is biofeedback?
The process by which physiological signals not normally available to human perception are transformed into easy to under stand groups.
What is adherence?
In health, it is the availability of a patient to maintain health behavior presented by a physician. For example, taking a prescription.
What is behavioral medicine?
A field similar to health psychology that integrates psychological factors in the treatment of a disease.
