Mid Tudor Crisis - Post revisionism - RG1 Flashcards
What does John Matusiak (A post revisionist historian) argue about both traditional and post revisionist historians?
That they are both prone to over simplifying their arguments, and that neither side paints an accurate picture of the mid-Tudor years.
John Matusiak labels the Mid-Tudor years as Years of trauma and Survival
Why does Matusiak claim that there was no crisis during the Mid Tudor years?
He argues that the essential state machinery was not under threat, but it was a time of trauma (especially in economy, religion and foreign policy) during which the state’s foreign policy were focused on survival rather than achievement
How do post revisionists view Edward and Mary’s reign?
They view both Edward and Mary’s reign as a period of continuity and not crisis
Post revisionists believe that instead of looking at the problems of Northumberland and Somerset we should look at what?
Edward himself- He was the centre of government and his position was threatened. Being in control of the crown meant that he had FULL power
-Due to this it could be argued that the crown was actually strengthened during this period
How do Post revisionists view Mary?
Many view her as a political pioneer and defied the odds by making female monarchy work.
Mary passed the Act of Regal power 1554 which gave female monarchs the same power as male monarchs- this was a remarkable achievement
