Microscopy Flashcards
What is an eyepiece lens?
The lens that you look down through - x10 magnification
What is the objective lens?
Different objective lenses with different magnification powers eg. X10, x20, x40
What is a stage?
It’s where you clip down your slide with the sample
What is the light used for?
It shines a light through the sample, so it is more visible/so you can visualise the sample
What’s the fine focus used for?
Moves the stage up and down in small movements ( for small adjustments ) to make the image more clear
What’s the coarse focus used for?
Moves the stage up and down in big movements to focus the image (makes the image more clear)
What is the equation for total magnification?
Total magnification= eye piece lens x objective lens
What is magnification?
It is how much bigger you have made an object (by a particular scale factor)
What is resolution?
The minimum distance needed between two objects, in order to be distinguished as two separate objects ( how clear it is )
What’s the equation for magnification?
Magnification = image size/real size
Which microscope had a higher resolution?
Electron microscope
Which microscope uses glass and light to view the specimen?
Light microscope
Which microscope has colour images?
Light microscope
Which microscope lets you see the sub-cellular structure?
Electron microscope
What equipment is needed for ‘how to use a light microscope to view an onion cell?
Light microscope
Onion
Tweezers
Iodine solution cover slip
Water
