what is a microorganism?
Bacterial prokaryotic, fungi, viruses
what does culture microorganisms mean?
To gorw them in a controlled setting so we can study them
what is culture medium?
Culture medium is usually agar jelly containing all the necessary nutrients that bacteria would need to grow
whats the first step to culturing a microorganism?
Agar jelly is heated to kill any unwanted microorganisms. this hot agar jelly is then poured into shallow round plastic dish called patri dishes and leave it to set
what do you do once the jelly has set?
When the jelly’s has set an inoculating loop is used to transfer microorganisms to the culture medium so the microorganisms multiply ( you pass through a flame first)
whats the 3rd step?
Paper discus are soaked in different types of anti-biotics and placed on the jelly, antibiotic-resistant bacteria will continue to grow around them but the non-resistant stairs will die
whats the last step?
A paper disc not soaked in antibiotic can be included as a control-this should show that any results are down to the antibiotic, not the paper disc its self
what is theres a circle around one disc?
Its an Inhabitation zone, where bacteria has ben killed off/ couldn’t grow.
what is an IV in this experiment ?
-The variable you are changing
