Microorganisms Overview Flashcards
1
Q
Staphylococci
A
- Aerobic, Gram (+)
- ex.) S. aureus, S. epidermis
2
Q
Streptococci
A
- Aerobic, Gram (+)
- ex.) S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, S. viridans
- strep do not make beta-lactamases so we can use old school penicillins on them
- S. pyogenes causes strep throat
3
Q
Enterococci
A
- Aerobic, Gram (+)
- ex.) E. faecalis, E. faecium
4
Q
Clostridium
A
- Anaerobic, Gram (+)
- ex.) C. tetanus, C. perfringens, C. difficile
5
Q
Enterobacteriaceae
A
- Aerobic, Gram (-)
- ex.) E. coli, Protous, Klobsiella, Salmonella
- E. coli is the most common cause of UTIs
6

- ex) H. influenza
9
Q
Neisseria
A
- Aerobic, Gram (-)
- ex.)N. gonorrhoeae, N. menigitides
10
Q
Bacteroides
A
- Anaerobic, Gram (-)
- B. fragilis
- Biggest anaerobie in the GI tract (the farther down you go the more you’ll see)
11
Q
Legionella
A
- Atypicals
- ex.) L. pneumophila
12
Q
Chlamydia
A
- Atypical
- ex.) C. pneumnia, C. trachomatis
13
Q
Mycoplasma
A
- Atypical
- ex.) M. pneumoniae
14
Q
Stapylococcus aureus
A
- Gram (+) cocci in clusters
- Methicillin resistance attributed to mecA gene
- 2 major MRSA categories: Healthcare-associated, and Community-associated
15
Q
Streptococcus pneumoniae
A
- Gram (+) cocci in pairs & chains
- Normal sinus colonizer in some
- encapsulated
- increasing resistance to Macorlides, beta-lactams, and fluoroquinolones
- Can cause: CAP, bacterial menigitis, most common pathogen in respiratory infections, sinusitis, Otitis media, etc
