Anemia of CKD Flashcards
1
Q
Hemoglobin (Hgb)
A
- Oxygen carrying molecule
- measured in grams/volume of blood
- Normal ranges: Men =13-17.5g/dL; Women = 12-16g/dL
2
Q
Hematocrit (Hct)
A
- Volume of RBC’s in unit of blood volume
- Good way to tell if someone is dehydrated
- Normal ranges: Men=41-53%; Women =36-46%
3
Q
Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)
A
- Average volume/size of each RBC
- Normal range: 80-100
- Helps determine type of anemia
4
Q
Macrocytic anemia
A
- Large RBCs = high MCV (>100)
- Causes: Folic acid and B12 deficiency
5
Q
Normocytic anemia
A
- Normal RBCs = normal MCV (80-100)
- Causes: chronic diseases (CKD)
- They’re not deficient in anything they’re just not making enough RBCs
6
Q
Microcytic anemia
A
- small RBCs =low MCV (<80)
- Causes: iron deficiency
7
Q
How long does it take a RBC to reach maturity?
A
12 days
8
Q
What is the average life span of an RBC?
A
120 days
9
Q
What hemoglobin level is considered anemia?
A
Less than or equal to 12g/dL
