Etiology of gonorrhea
Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gram-negative cocci)
Symptom onset of gonorrhea
2-8 days in males (typically abrupt in onset)
10 days in females (females are usually asymptomatic)
1st line treatment in gonorrhea (including pregnancy)
Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) 250mg IM once + Azithromycin 1g PO once
OR
Ceftriaxone 250mg IM once + doxycycline 100mg PO BID x 7 days
Genital Herpes Etiology
most commonly Herpes Simplex Virus-2
Anti-viral treatment of genital herpes
- Acyclovir 400mg PO TID or 200mg 5x daily for 7-10 days (for primary episode); Acyclovir 400mg TID or 800mg BID x 5 days for recurrent episodes
- Valtrex 1g BID x 7-10days
Suppressive therapy in HIV patients
Suppressive therapy does not reduce HSV or HIV transmission from patients who are HIV-positive
HPV-6 & HPV-11
Most commonly associated w/ genital warts
HPV-16 & HPV-18
Most commonly associated w/ cervical cancer
Treatment of HPV
Can include cryotherapy, surgery, and topical agents
Cervarix
Vaccine for HPV-16 & HPV-18 (females only)
Gardasil
Vaccine for HPV-6, 11, 16, & 18 (females & males)
Gardasil 9
Vaccine for HPV-6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 25, 52, & 58 (females or males)
