Microorganisms Flashcards
What are the 5 types of microorganisms?
Virus, Bacteria, Fungi, Helminths, and Protoza
Virus
The smallest microorganisms that can only be viewed with a specialized microscope
How can viruses reproduce?
Only inside another living cell
Virus resistance level
More resistant to treatments, CAN’T be treated with antibiotics (antivirals)
Examples of viruses
Flu, common cold, HIV
Bacteria
Single celled organisms that multiply rapidly, they grow and display differently on a microscope
Is bacteria treatable?
Yes, with antibiotics
Resistance
When your body becomes immune to an antibiotic, this is bad
Fungi
Simple plant-like organisms that live on dead organic matter
What doesn’t kill fungi
Antibiotics
How is fungi treated?
With anti fungal medications
Examples of fungi
Ringworm, athletes foot, thrush,
Helminths
Parasitic organisms, commonly called flukes or worms
How are Helminths transmitted
Through ingestion of eggs in contaminated food or meat, or being bit through the skin
How are helminths treated?
Anti-helmintics
