Anatomy Vocab Flashcards
Frontal plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into a front and back half
Sagittal plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into a left and right half (Divides into identical halves, think of the two t’s in sagittal)
Transverse Plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into an upper and lower half (Think of the t as the upper body and v as the lower body in transverse)
Superior (Cranial)
Toward the head (Think I am better than you, so I am above)
Inferior
Away from the head (Think you are below/under)
Anterior
Front (When the front of your body looks down at the ground you see “Ants”)
Posterior
Back
Medial
Towards the mid-line (Think of the “m” in middle and medial)
Bilateral
Both sides
Lateral
Away from the mid-line, out to the side
Proximal
Towards the nearest trunk (chest and abdomen), Only use when talking about arms or legs
Distal
Away from or the farthest from the trunk
When using distal and proximal what are the points of reference?
Shoulders for the arms and hips for the legs
