Microhematocrit Determination Flashcards
Blood is consists of:
- About 55% plasma
- About 45% of red blood cells or erythrocytes
- About 1% of white blood cells (leukocytes) and platelets (thrombocytes)
Solid or Formed Elements
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
White Blood Cells (WBC)
Platelets or thrombocytes
White blood cells has
▪ Granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils)
▪ Lymphocytes
▪ Monocytes
Liquid or Fluid portion
plasma or serum
a cloudy yellow fluid due to the presence of fibrinogen (major clotting factor) & other clotting factors
plasma
a clear yellow fluid in which fibrinogen & other coagulation factors are consumed or absent
serum
It is the volume of red blood cells per unit of blood volume or the percentage volume of red blood cells in a volume of whole blood
hematocrit
hematocrit is also know as
Packed Cell Volume (PCV) or Erythrocyte Volume Fraction (EVF)
Former Name of hematocrit
Packed Red Cell Volume (PRCV)
It can become a point of reference for the capability of blood to deliver oxygen
hematocrit
too low hematocrit
anemia
bleeding
leukemia
too high hematocrit
polycythemia
heart disease
dehydration
measurement of RBC percentage in total blood volume
hematocrit
can be used to monitor interval bleeding post surgery
hematocrit
reference range
- At birth: 45-60%
- Female: 36-48%
- Male: 40-55%
slight decrease after 50 years old
