Microbiology Ch. 34 Flashcards
The ratio between the toxic dose and the therapeutic dose of a drug, used as a measure of the drug’s relative safety.
Therapeutic index
A route of drug administration that is nonoral (i.e, injection)
Parenteral route
Chemotherapeutic agents that are effective against many different kinds of pathogens.
Broad Spectrum Drugs
A microbial Product or its derivative that kills susceptible microorganisms or inhibits their growth.
Antibiotic
The ability of a chemotherapeutic agent to kill or inhibit a microbial pathogen while damaging the host as little as possible.
Selective toxicity
Inhibiting or retarding the bacterial growth
Static
Chemotherapeutic agents that are effective only against a limited variety of microorganisms
Narrow Spectrum Drugs
Compounds used in the treatment of disease that destroy pathogens or inhibit their growth at concentrations low enough to avoid doing undesirable damage to the host.
