Microbiology Flashcards
Micro-organism (microbes)
Small living things (need microscope)
Bacteria
Larger than viruses
Simple singed-celled:no nucleus
Divide into aerobes and anaerobes
Reproduce asexually
Aerobe
Need oxygen
Anaerobes
Do not need oxygen
Asexually
Clone(double in numbers ever 20 mins)
In order to grow bacteria need:
Food, water,a suitable temperature and a suitable pH
Soil bacteria
Break down (decompose) Dead plant and animal material to release nutrients into the soil
Uses of bacteria
Decay wastes, make cheese, yoghurt, insulin and silage
Harmful bacteria
Cause disease, food spoilage and tooth decay
Escherichia coil
Lives in your gut, helps your body digest also makes certain vitamins.
Salmonella
Usually harmful
Fungi
Fungal cell similar to plant cell but does not possess chlorophyll (not green and cannot make food)
Microbiology
Study of small living things (viruses, bacteria, fungi)
Biotechnology
The use of living things to make useful substances.
Medical biotechnology
Bacteria and fungi used to make antibiotics
Altered organisms are used to make insulin, blood clotting chemical,s for haemophiliacs, and antibodies.
