Microbiology Flashcards
Gram Positive cocci that synthesize dextrans from glucose
Viridan Streptococci
S. mutants, S. sanguis
Erythema Nodosum
Erythematous to violaceous subcutaneous nodules on the leg
Associated with (Strep pyogenese, Staph aureus, coccidiomycosis, chlamydia, sarcoidosis, crohns disease)
Viridan streptococci symptom
Abdominal abscesses, septicemia, deep wound infection
subacute bacterial endocarditis with preexisting cardiac valvular defect after dental manipulation
Use prophylaxis!
Exotoxin that increase sensitivity to histamine
Pertussis
Stimulate adenylate cyclase to increase cAMP, leading to increased insulin production, lymphocyte and neutrophil dysfunction, and increased sensitivity to histamine
Coccidioides immitis presentation
Acute pneumonia Chronic progressive pneumonia Pulmonary nodules and cavities Extrapulmonary nonmeningeal disease Meningities
Erythema nodosum
Fungal infection associated with pigeon droppings
Cryptococcus neoformans
Dimorphic fungi associed with bird dropping, bat dropping, or caves
Histoplasma capsulatum
Fungal infection associated with previous TB infection
Aspergillus fumigatus (fungal ball)
Fungal infection in pt who had chemotherapy
Neutropenia
Candida albicans, A. fumigatus, mucor, rhyzopus
Pt with asthma developing allergic reaction with bronchiectasis and eosiniphilia
Aspergillus fumigatus - allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA)
Association between impetigo infection vs pharyngeal infection and the formation of Glomerulo nephritis and rheumatic fever
Impetigo- PSGN ONLY
Pharyngeal infection- both PSGN and RF
Impetigo causes
Strep pyogenes (GABHS)
Staph aureus
Fever, diarrhea, rose spots on abdomen
Salmonella typhi
Ribosylation of EF 2
Pseudomonas and corynebacteria diptheria
Inhibition of the 60S subunit
Shigella and EHEC
