Microbe Quiz Flashcards
Name for the common cold. It’s a naked virus”
Rhinovirus
Enveloped virus, also called Herpesvirus 4 or Mono. Spreads very easily by kissing or other bodily fluids. Causes extreme sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, swollen spleen.
Epstein-Barr virus
Also called strep throat. Encapsulated, gram positive bacteria (cocci).
Streptococcus pyogenes (noninvasive)
Also called Scarlet Fever. Produces an exotoxin and has a capsule. Gram positive bacteria. Causes very sore throat and red skin rash.
Streptococcus pyogenes (invasive)
Gram positive bacteria that is sphere shaped; encapsulated. Some healthy people carry this bacteria on their skin naturally. Others may become infected.
Staphylococcus aureus
This gram positive bacteria is resistant to nearly all antibiotics and is becoming resistant to vancomycin. It causes a skin infection that can cause abscesses.
Staphylococcus aureus MRSA
Gram positive bacteria that can grow as low as 0 degrees and causes symptoms after ingestion of contaminated food. Pregnant women are 10 times more likely to get this bacteria and should not eat soft cheeses.
Listeria monocytogenes
Gram negative, spiral shaped bacteria that can live in the digestive system for a long time. It causes ulcers and burning pain in the belly. Treatment usually includes antibiotics and an acid reducer.
Helicobacter pylori
Gram negative spirochete that is spread through the urine of infected animals in water or soil.
Leptospira interrogans
Enveloped virus that is transmitted through broken skin or mucous membranes. Symptoms are delayed and the incubation period can last months after exposed. The acute period is almost always fatal, but post exposure prophylaxis (immune globulin) may relieve symptoms.
Rabies virus
Enveloped virus that is spread by droplet transmission. Causes fever, chills, sore throat, etc. Antiviral medication may be given. There is a vaccine.
Influenza virus
Naked virus that is spread by direct contact or eating/drinking contaminated food. Spreads very quickly and is typically seen during November to April.
Norwalk virus
Also known as Measles. Enveloped virus transmitted by droplet. High fever, cough, runny nose, rash. Very dangerous and highly contagious. Vaccine available.
Rubeola virus
Also called German measles. Enveloped virus that is spread by droplet. Very rare. Fever, sore throat, rash–can cause miscarriage.
Rubella virus
Enveloped virus spread by respiratory droplets. Causes puffy cheeks, swollen jaw, fever, headache. Vaccine.
Mumps virus
