Micro U2 L3. Flashcards
What type of virus are arboviruses?
RNA virus (from arthropods - mostly mosquitoes and ticks)
What are the 4 clinical syndromes that arboviruses can cause?
- systemic febrile illness 2. fever with arthritis 3. encephalitis 4. hemorrhagic fever
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) - family and genera
family: togaviridae; genera: alphavirus
How many encephalitic viruses are in the alphavirus genus? What are they?
4 - EEE (east US), WEE (west US), VEE (SA and NA), everglades
Why is EEE clinically important?
highest probability for developing encephalitis from the encephalitic viruses and also highest mortality rate —> CICERO SWAMP!
What are the vectors for EEE?
migrating birds and mosquitos - human is a dead end host
Japanese encephalitis virus natural host
pig and migrating birds - human is accidental host
How is Japanese encephalitis virus diagnosed?
travel history
Which arbovirus has a vaccine?
Japanese encephalitis virus
When is Japanese encephalitis virus transmitted?
all year long - culex mosquitos (night feeders)
Japanese encephalitis virus symptoms
encephalitis with high mortality and morbidity
Yellow fever virus family and genus
flaviviridiae, flavivirus
Where did yellow fever originate?
africa - divided into west and east african lineages (W africa is the one that spread)
Life cycles of yellow fever
both zoonotic and urban cycles (monkey -> mosquito -> human and human -> mosquito ->human)
What does yellow fever cause?
hemorrhagic disease
Dengue fever family and genus
flaviviridiae and flavivirus (same as yellow fever)
Clinical syndroms Dengue fever
febrile illness to severe hemorrhagic fever (SHOCK SYNDROME)
What is the most common arboviral disease in the subtropical and tropical regions of the world?
dengue fever (including Key West in the US)
What is a sign of Dengue fever?
petechiae
What is the pathology of Japanese encephalitis virus?
febrile headache -> aseptic meningitis -> encephalitis
