30 August 1958 400 white people angered by seeing a mixed race couple attacked the homes of Caribbean people and it lasted for 5 days

17 May 1959 Kelso Cochrane was murdered by a gang of white youths and the murderers were never caught
This angered the black community
What were the White Defence League?
Violent organisation that demanded that Britain should be kept white and its office was in Notting Hill
What was the Union Movement?
Far right group led by Oswald Mosley its slogan was ‘Keep Britain White’ and it had offices in Notting Hill
What were the Teddy Boys?
Gang that roamed the streets looking for black people attack
What was the Mangrove?
Police regularly raided it for drugs and furious at the police action the British Black Panthers organised a protest march where 150 people were arrested
What were the British Black Panthers?
Campaigned against police brutality and social issues formed in 1968 and by the 1970s had 3000 members. Their headquarters were on All Saints Road.
