Why did Huguenots come to England?
Persecution from Catholic authorities
What did Huguenots do?
They were skilled craftworkers
Why did Palatines come?
Left due to bad harvests, famine, poverty and war
What did Palatines do?
Had very few skills aside from farming and labouring
Why did African migrants come to England?
Enslaved people were brought by their owners
Why did Indian migrants come to England?
Ayahs returned to England with the families the worked for
Lascars settled in England looking for a better life
Why and when did Jews return to England?
In 1656 Cromwell allowed Jews to return to strengthen the economy
Huguenots experience
Most found work easily and prospered and many set up their own businesses
Palatines experience
Most had few skills and a few found labouring jobs
3000 were deported to Ireland
Jews experience
Worked mainly as bankers, doctors, scholars and jewellers. Weren’t allowed to serve in the army, work as lawyers or attend university.
Allowed to open synagogues
Indians experience
Ayahs’ experiences depended on their employers, some ayahs were abandoned
Lascars lived a life of hard labour
Africans experience
Some were brought overseas as servants
Others were employed in a variety of skilled jobs
What were the may day riots?
In 1675 , 1681, 1683 English weavers complained that Huguenots were taking their jobs it ended when Huguenots offered to teach their skills
