Mi 3.q Flashcards
Apoptosis
The changes that occur within a cell as it undergoes programmed cell death
Biopsy
The removal and examination of tissues, cells, or fluids from the living body
Bone scan
A test that detects areas of increased or decreased bone metabolism; test is preformed to identify abnormal processes involving the bone such as tumor, infection, or fracture
Cancer
A malignant tumor of potentially unlimited forth that expands locally
Oncogene
A gene having the potential to cause a normal cell to become cancerous
Osteosarcoma
A cancer derived from bone or containing bone tissues
Cell cycle
An ordered sequence of events in the life of a eukaryotic cell from its origin in the division of a parent cell until its own divisions into two
Cat scan (Computed tomography scan)
A sectional 3 dimensional view of the body constructed by computed tomography
Diagnostic imaging
Technologies used by medical professionals to look inside your body for clues about a medical condition this includes x rays, ct scans. Nuclear medicine scans, mri scans, and ultrasounds
Microarray
A microarray immobilized single stranded DNA fragments known as nucleotide sequencing that is used especially in the identification and sequencing of DNA samples and in the analysis of gene expression in healthy or cancerous cells.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
Noninvasive diagnostic test that produces computerized images of the internal body and is based on nuclear magnetic resonance of atoms within the body induced by the application of radio waves
Positron emission tomography
Nuclear medicine imaging where small amounts of radioactive material and special cameras to evaluate organ and tissue function highlights areas of high tissue metabolism in the body.
Proto-oncogene
A normal cellular gene corresponding to a oncogene; a gene with the potential to cause cancer but would first need to be mutated or altered to cause cancer.
Radiology
A branch of medicine where radiant energy is used in the diagnosis or treatment of a disease
Risk factor
Something that increases risk or susceptibility
Tumor suppressor gene
A gene whose protein products prevent uncontrolled cell growth
X ray
An exam that uses x-ray radiation to image the body
Metastasize
The spread of cancer from one tissue to the other in the body
