4.1 - Kidney Stuff Flashcards
Function of Kidney
Filters blood, regulates fluid volume, and produces urine
Function of the ureter
Muscular tubes that transport urine from kidneys to bladder, has flaps to prevent back flow
Function of the bladder
Hollow organ within pelvic cavity, fills with urine
Function of the urethra
tube that carries urine from bladder to outside of the body
Minor calyx function
Collects urine from the pyramid to the major calyces
Renal papilla function
Carries renal filtrate from papillary ducts to the calyces
Major calyx function
Collects renal filtrate from pyramids to the ureter
Renal pelvis
Central stem connecting to the ureter
Renal pyramids function
Collects urine from nephron and transports it to calyces
Renal medulla
Main function is to regulate concentration and contents of urine
Renal cortex function
Where nephrons begin removes waste and returns needed substances to your body
Renal capsule function
Protects vital tissues and structures in the kidney
Path of blood entering kidney
Renal artery -> interlobular artery -> afferent arteriole -> glomerulus -> efferent arteriole -> inter lobular vein ->renal vein
Path of urine in kidney
Bowman’s capsule -> proximal convoluted tubule -> loop of henle -> distal convoluted tubule -> collecting duct -> calyx -> ureter -> bladder -> urethra
Where ones reabsorption occur
proximal convoluted tubule
Where does secretion occur
Distal convoluted tubule
What is secreted
excess ions, waste, anything the body doesn’t need
What is reabsorbed
Water, glucose, ions
Where does filtration occur
Bowman’s capsule
eGFR is bad when
It’s lower than 20 (indicates need for dialysis) less than 15 (kidney transplant)
Ketones in the blood indicates
Anorexia and keto acidosis
Crystals in urine, back pain, fever
UTI
need to pee, history of pituitary problems
Diabetes caused by pituitary gland
Blood in urine, puffy face, protein in urine
Chronic kidney disease
