Metonymy vs. Metaphor Flashcards
What is a metaphor (theorist quote)
Metaphor: is understanding one kind of thing in terms of another” (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003: 5)
SOURCE AND TARGET DOMAINS.
What is Metonymy?
Metonymy: Referring to one entity in terms of another (THE SOURCE AND TARGET BELONG TO THE SAME DOMAIN, UNLIKE METAPHORS)
Source domain vs Target domain (metaphor)
Target domain – is the topic or concept that you want to describe
Source domain – the concept that you draw upon
Argument vs war (source vs target)
(Source: Domain of WAR)
Aggressors/Defenders
Defending
Attacking
Surrendering
(Target: Domain of ARGUMENT)
Opposite arguments
Objecting to an argument
Maintaining one’s viewpoint
Changing one’s mind
What are dead metaphors?
Metaphors that have been so overused they no longer need any thought.
What are original metaphors? (literature)
A NEW CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR: for example, a hoover being an animal by ‘grazing the carpet’
How to tell the difference between a metaphor and a metonymy?
It’s a metaphor if you can change it to a simile:
“A heated fluid in a container” -> Anger IS LIKE a heated fluid in a container.
DO THESE METAPHORS VS. METONYMYS:
She is the true angel in my life.
The blueberry pie wants to see the chef.
He writes a fine hand.
He is a snake in the grass.
Fox News has always maintained…
As the bullet pierced his chest, I watched the life flow out of him.
I do not follow the herd; I carve my own path.
She is the shoulder I always cry on.
My gym is a prison.
