Coherence vs. Cohesion Flashcards
What is Cohesion?
The way in which a text is tied together by linguistic devices such as:
Therefore, And, However
Thus, making Coherence possible as it helps the writers ideas easier to follow.
What is Coherence?
Coherence is when a text has sentences that follow on from each other in an orderly fashion so that the reader can make sense of it.
What are the two theorists that introduce the ‘Overview of Cohesion’
(Cohesion in English)
Halliday and Hason (1976)
The problem with the Cohesion theory ?
The category of ‘Collocation’ was problematic because it was not clear how exactly words are related.
- Does the cohesive effect actually come from Collocation?
- Or are the words related because they’re semantically related?
