- created in 1980 by LaBerge
- first method that used scientific research
- based on a behavior called prospective memory which involves setting an intention to do something later
- involves setting intention to remember one is dreaming
- shown to be effective for some - especially when combined with reality checks
- success may depend on factors such as individual motivation, concentration

Wake back to bed (WBTB)
A
- entering REM while you are still conscious
- involves waking up from sleep after several hours. staying awake for a short period (20-30mins) then returning to sleep with LD intention
- effective for increasing likelihood - particularly when combined with other techniques
- however may disrupt sleep continuity and lead to sleep disturbances

- happens when you directly enter a dream from waking life
- helps you stay conscious while body goes to sleep
- you will need to lay down and relax until you experience a hypogogic hallucination
- simple method but difficult to learn
- other techniques increased chances of WILD

- aim to cultivate meta-cogntion skills which can facilitate LD
- may involve observing thoughts, which can carry over into dream awareness
- associated with increased self-awareness and insight, which may contribute to induction of LD
- however, research on this is still emerging
